Who Doesn't Follow Me Back on Bluesky?

Bluesky's app will happily tell you that you follow 480 people and 300 follow you, but it has no filter for the question everyone actually asks: which of those follows aren't coming back? There's no "doesn't follow back" tab, no mutuals list, and paging through two lists side by side stops being fun at about account number forty. Here's how to get the answer in one click.

Why Bluesky can't show you this

Follows on Bluesky (and the AT Protocol underneath it) are one-directional records: your follow of someone lives in your repository, their follow of you lives in theirs. The official app renders each list separately and never joins them. The data to answer "who doesn't follow me back?" is completely public - somebody just has to fetch both lists and compare them. That's the entire trick.

What to do with the list

Don't speed-run it. A one-way follow isn't an insult - news accounts, big artists, and feed bots were never going to follow back, and that's fine if you enjoy their posts. The list is most useful for finding the dead weight: abandoned accounts, accounts you followed during a follow-train in 2024, and accounts whose posts you always scroll past.
